Learning & wellbeing centre

All children are valued, respected and welcomed to the Learning Centre, whatever their additional educational need. We support students who may be following a reduced timetable, whether due to sporting commitments or because they are students for whom English is an additional language. We also offer learning support for students with specific learning differences and specialized programmes for those learning English for the first time. Many students drop in to find impromptu help with homework, academic or emotional support and all are welcomed.

The Learning Centre is open every morning from 07:45 - 08:15, during every break and lunch to allow any student to access a wealth of practical and emotional support.

We are very fortunate to be able to welcome and organize the services of an independent trained speech and language therapist to work with students on site one day every week. For similar services in French, we can recommend outside providers. Programmes can include speech sound production, language development and social skills, and are personalised to the child’s needs.

A specific programme is delivered to students from Year 1 to Year 10, by a team of specialist teachers. The programme is designed for pupils who have a first language other than English and are beginners in English, the language of instruction at St. George’s International School. Students are integrated in to as many subjects as possible in order to build friendships and to enjoy the benefits of a variety of language experiences. They also benefit from an intensive specialized English (ELAP) programme, working in small mixed groups where they can build the confidence to speak and interact in fun activities.
Students work towards official examinations such as the Key English Test (KET), Preliminary English Test (PET), as well as the Cambridge Young Learners English (YLE) tests.

This intervention is accessible to all pupils who may be experiencing difficulty with some aspects of home/school life, e.g. a family bereavement which may impact on their school life. Social and Friendship Skills support sessions are designed for pupils with social communication difficulties. Pupils work together as a team, or individually with a teacher, to practise and develop their verbal and non-verbal communication skills and to work collaboratively and solve problems or conflicts. The programme also aims, through group work wherever possible, to improve self-esteem and relationship skills in children who are having difficulties in making and maintaining friends.

In addition, Marie Davis, an independent educational psychologist and child counsellor visits every week and can provide individual counselling to students by arrangement.

The Head of Pastoral care and Wellbeing offers an open door and a ready support to all students. Wellbeing is part of the school curriculum and students are encouraged to manage their physical and mental wellbeing and recognize when they may need help.

The school offers a challenging and extensive curriculum, in which all students needs are met. Those students with a particular passion or interest are actively encouraged to contact staff directly. Academic Support sessions are run after school for those students wishing to further their understanding in specific subject areas and these are run by faculties. The school also works to offer a variety of enrichment opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom through clubs, activities and projects, harnessing and developing their own individual gifts and talents.

The partnership with parents is vital to the pupils’ success in school. We have an open-door policy so please come and talk to us about any concerns.
