It was an absolute honour to be invited to speak at such an auspicious occasion. I could have spent my whole time speaking about how well St. George's mission, values and learning principles fit in with Nelson Mandela's. I was indeed touched by the beautiful music and speeches made by both the pupils and staff.
International schools in Switzerland: FAQ
How does the education system work in Switzerland ?
Education is compulsory from the age of four up to the age of 15 (Secondary I) whereafter the apprenticeship pathway or the Secondary II route leads to various university options. Languages play an important role, and students learn at least three languages: their official local one (mainly German, French or Italian), a second national language and English. At St. George’s, we cater for children from 18 months to 18 years old and offer a Cambridge International curriculum followed by the IB Diploma programme.
What are the languages spoken in international schools of Switzerland?
As an international school, St. George’s stimulates language learning opportunities and offers several bilingual and multilingual pathways which include — in addition to English and French — a variety of languages offered in their curriculum, such as German, Spanish and students’ home language. Students learn about diverse cultures and perspectives and develop their intercultural awareness. They have a wider perspective of the world, are more adaptable and creative, have increased communication skills, develop a strong sense of identity, are good problem-solvers and have highly developed cognitive skills. They are confident in social situations and have extended educational and career opportunities.
Why is the Swiss education system among the world’s best?
Switzerland is a multilingual country at a crossroad in Europe. The country has a very well-established educational system, recognised internationally for its standards and organisation.
